The Plot Thickens….
Just when you thought there were enough options, along came a load more. But don’t worry, we will be on hand to lead you to the best awning for your needs. If your not sure what you need, give us a ring or drop us an e-mail. Some measurements and ‘photos are always helpful.
‘Classic’ or ‘Standard’ awnings are available from 1.22m wide up to 6.0m.
The Arms come out from 1.50m in 25cm steps up to 3.50m, although there are limitations to the projection at 5.0m wide. This is because of the pressure of wind against the fabric.
There are a number of solutions to allow larger projections and widths. The first is a ‘Crossed Arm’ system, which allows the arms to cross over each other without touching. These pictures illustrate the principle. The second method of increasing the awning width is by increasing the amount of supports. This can be done, in the case of the ‘Classic’ style awning with a ‘monobloc’. This is a bar supported by several mountings which the awning is attached to. Alternatively, in the case of the ‘Cassette’ awnings, additional supports can be added to the wall on certain models. This allows us to offer a single awning up to a width of 7.0m combined with a maximum projection of 3.25m. Of course, this adds more pressure to the wall, so the fixings have to be up to the task, see our ‘Mounting’ Page for more details.
There are 3 basic types of arms used on Patio Awnings. Starting with the most basic. This is a Chinese manufactured arm from a kit sold online and in DIY shops:
The second photo is also a cable arm, however, this time it has two cables, slightly better. (We don’t think anyone uses this type of arm any more)
This 3rd ‘photo is a double cable arm on a Spanish manufactured awning:
Going up a notch, we come to the ‘Chain’ type arm. These are very popular and durable. This one is a LLaza GL arm.
Llaza are the only manufacturer to offer the next arm. It is available in two sizes, the ART 250 and ART 350. It has a multi-strand cable, like a sinew, which is highly tensioned, and coated in nylon for protection.
There are other manufacturers arms that look similar, however, these are a chain type arm with a dust shield.
We do not recommend any lubrication of the arms, as the dust in the air will adhere to the lubricant and create a compound paste, increasing wear on the moving components.
